  4. <p>Under the codename Pave Eagle, the USAF acquired 33 examples of the Beech A36 Bonanza for use in a classified project in Southeast Asia. Initial procurement consisted of six aircraft (68-10531/68-10536) which received the designation YQU-22A. These were followed by 27 production QU-22Bs (69-7693/69-7705, 70-1535/70-1548). After acquisition from Beech, the aircraft were delivered to the Univac division of Sperry Rand for the installation of mission equipment. Among the most notable differences were the blanking of the rear cabin windows and the fitment of a geared propeller, necessitating a fairing above the engine. The QU-22s were fitted with radio control equipment, which allowed them to operate either with or without a pilot.

  6. <p>Deployed to Southeast Asia, the QU-22s flew from Thailand in support of the Igloo White program. This used air-dropped seismic sensors to detect the passing of Communist vehicles along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The system required an airborne relay to receive the signals from the sensors and transmit them to the 'Dutch Mill' infiltration surveillance center at Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. Initially, Lockheed EC-121Rs were used, but these proved to be vulnerable flying near the trail. Accordingly the QU-22s were used, manned by one pilot, to fly over the trail and relay the signals to the EC-121Rs, which were flying in a safe orbit away from the trail.

  8. <p>A single aircraft which also acquired a U-22 designation was the Beech Model PD.249, a two-seat A36 Bonanza (70-7859) evaluated unsuccessfully with six wing pylons and a 345-hp GIO-520 engine for the light close support role as the YAU-22A.
